California 101: Hollywood
Hollywood wasn't quite what I expected but then again, everything I expected. Grauman's Chinese Theatre was quite impressive in a gaudy kind of way. You expect the "Walk of Stars" to be glitzy but what they don't show is that some stars are outside parking lots and construction sites.
The Macdonald's on Hollywood Boulevard was a homage to the film industry- film reels hanging from the ceiling and arty black "n" white posters of film stars on the wall. Now I thought we've got some pretty weird characters in New York but LA takes the biscuit. As we were leaving Macdonald's, one guy was at the counter loudly arguing with the manager that the food "tastes like dogshit".
Hollywood Boulevard was actually quite seedy - there were lots of costumes/wig shops, sex shops, shops selling incense and bongs mixed in with the shops selling tourist souvenirs. Cruising the whole length of Sunset Boulevard was an eye-opener - everything from stripjoints to fashionable clubs where the celebs hang out....
