The Land of the Bargain

Paul warned me that once I settled in the States, I would never spend so much money on expensive brand-name clothes again. Never! I exclaimed in my youthful exuberance. His prediction is coming true.

Although my taste is still the same, with a little time and effort in America, everything is at a fraction of the price I would have paid!

If you don't fancy buying clothes during the numerous sales, clothes will move to discount stores such as TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Daffys. If you are ok with searching through the racks in these stores, you can find good brand-name items at a fraction of the original price. Try 70-80% off the original price.

Department stores such as Saks or Barneys even have special "outlet" stores such as Saks Off 5th Avenue where they offload their previous season's inventory at deep discounts.

And then, there are the outlet malls. Woodbury Common in upstate New York is one with many designer brand-name stores such as Bally, Gucci and Ferragamo. If you don't mind last season's collection, you can buy beautiful clothes at very reasonable prices.

Department stores offer special incentives such as 15-25% off during any Public Holiday. New York State offers sales-tax free on clothing under $100 occasionally.

Since I've arrived here, I've bought DKNY corduroy jeans for $20 (10 quid if we use the current exchange rate), Bally shoes at 70% off original price, a nice sweater at 90% off original price and countless other bargains. H&M is cheap by any normal standards but I picked up a good work blouse there today for $5.53! (That's 2 quid 50...)

With so many opportunities to be a bargain-hunter extraordinare, you will be truly a fool to buy full-price!

The other way to stop spending so much is not to bother buying designer clothes anymore. My current fave store is Zara (Spanish I think) which stocks nicely cut clothes for very reasonable prices. Quite hate some designer places now, CK and Armani Exchange are completely grotesque. Can't believe I used to spend so much in my early 20's!

Even Zara I think is a tad too pricey except in a sale...

Well Yee, I have no option but to fly myself to NY now! Thought I think I might have to apply for another interest-free credit card before I go....PLEASE STOP TEMPTING ME!

Ok, this has to be the most amazing deal ever Paul has been able to wrangle! We bought a DVD-R player off Amazon for $400. Since he has so much trouble with changing prices on their website and it still isn't delivered yet (it's been 2 weeks and it is supposed to be 1-2 days), he negotiated with them to get it for free!! Yes, folks - they are now sending this item to us for nothing!!!
