Chinese New Year in New York
After experiencing the extravaganza that is Hong Kong, Chinese New Year in New York is low-key but still celebratory. They have a flower market pre- CNY, firecrackers and lion dance in Chinatown on the 1st day of CNY and a big parade this weekend.
I got the auspicious door poetry up and tied a red ribbon round my plant. I bought an octagonal candy tray but didn't get the various necessary flowers/plants together.
For pre-CNY dinner, friends came round and we cooked up 8 dishes (we counted the soup and the dessert). We had the obligatory whole fish, shitake mushrooms & abalone, rice cake and tong yuen for dessert. With all of us working full-time, we didn't start eating until 9pm!!
On the 2nd day of CNY, I accompanied Paul to the Chinese Planning Council's annual CNY fund-raising banquet (he works at the council). The usual dishes and a lion dance. Lots of people wearing red but I broke tradition and wore brown/sky blue - such a rebel. And no surprise here but no luck at the raffle...
