The Food Network: Part I - American Portions

Home of the Supersize

I was looking at myself in the full-length mirror the other day. Despite eating a healthy, 5-fruit and vegetables a day diet, my mid-riff is looking decidedly chubby. It could be the Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream - no doubt, a factor. Or how about simply the amount of food I'm consuming?

Now I have always had a healthy appetite but since landing State-side, my stomach has gone through stretching motions. From feeling hungry after the meagre (but elegantly presented) portions in Japan, my stomach has been enjoying itself. A little too much.

Your friend comes over for dinner carting a huge mammoth-sized 1lb bag of tortilla chips. The bag says "Restaurant style".

You are at a Italian restaurant and you order a starter and an entree. Your starter arrives on a huge plate. You manage to eat the whole thing but when the entree arrives, you can only pick at it. Concerned, the waiter asks if the food is alright?

You are at "I Hop - House of Pancakes" for breakfast. Look around you - Americans stuffing their faces with gigantic omelettes filled and rolled to the size of your arm, with side dishes of sour cream and potatoes. Unlimited tea and coffee.

A new wave of healthy low-carb and south beach diet, you say? Hardees have recently brought out their "Monster Thickburger". 2 thick beef patties, 3 bacon strips, lots of cheese...1,420 calories and 107g of fat. Critics have nicknamed it the "Death Burger" or "food porn". Sales are doing well.

It's enough to make you a diet-conscious semi-health nut for life. Oh wait, that's me!

Doesn't explain why a shoe size 9 in the US is a size 8 in the UK though.
