Yellowstone & Grand Teton

In 2015, we took a trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park. Landing in Montana, our first stop was Chico Hot Springs in Paradise Valley. Staying overnight, we enjoyed dipping in the hot springs and a massage at one of the most beautifully-situated day spas ever. Hot springs etiquette is quite different in the US compared to Japan though. Everyone wears swimsuits and the water is warm as opposed to hot so you can swim comfortably.

It was a short scenic drive form Paradise Valley to Yellowstone. What we did not appreciate ahead of the trip was the rising altitude! Yellowstone starts at around 5000ft above sea level and at some places, rises to 8000ft. Having always lived close to sea level, it was a surprise to feel breathless, woozy and unsteady on our feet. Paul had a constant headache throughout the trip.

There were several geological features to see at Yellowstone such as Old Faithful geyser and various formations. Bison roamed freely in the surrounding fields and sometimes waded onto roads.

Food was nothing to write home about - bison burgers and fries featured on most menus but we weren't here primarily for the food.

Grand Teton National Park had the more impressive scenery. We stayed at the Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa in Teton Village which featured studio apartments with kitchenettes. Teton Village even had a Thai restaurant which we enjoyed! Jackson Hole was nearby - full of art shops and sophisticated cafes and restaurants. The highlight of the trip was our (breathless) hike around Jenny Lake for the views.
