Art in Central Park

Brightening up a dull and cold February

So The Gates project has been and gone. It cost US$20m to put together - all funded by the artists. The Christos - not content with wrapping up German buildings in silver fabric, they got the Mayor's blessing to install orange "Gates" throughout Central Park for 3 weeks only. New Yorkers were bemused or puzzled or...both. But they did come out to see them - and so did many others from around the country, generating an estimated US$398m worth of tourism dollars in a slow month.

Is there any meaning behind this artwork? Some say it is the sheer colossal size of the project that is art. Others say it shows how different Central Park could look during a snowy February. As for myself, the orange fabric was quite pretty when the sun shone through but seriously, I have no idea!!

Looks like something out of "The Village"
